Salt Warriors: Insurgency on the Rio Grande

This historical nonfiction book recounts the Salt War of 1877, a violent conflict in West Texas centered around control of salt lakes near El Paso. These salt deposits had traditionally been used by local Mexican-American communities who considered them communal resources. But as Anglo-American entrepreneurs moved into the region, they attempted to privatize access to the salt, sparking a conflict between Mexican residents and American businessmen, lawmen, and militias.
